Gastric -Band Technology
Following FDA approval for their EndoFLIP product, Medical Device developer Crospon has broken into the US market.
Crospon develops medical devices within the area of gastroenterology specifically in monitoring, diagnosis and therapy.
The World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery were presented with pilot clinical trial results for the optimum stoma size for gastric band adjustment.
Following the release in the European market in 2009, EndoFLIP will now be launched in the US market.
“Gastric banding is the fastes-growing class of bariatric surgery in the US, and we believe that EndoFLIP can bring a new science to gastric-band adjustment”, says Larry Fulton, VP Sales for the Americas.
Crospon Principal investigator Dr Robert G Snow also added, “In addition, we look forward to collaborating with a number of new leading bariatric surgery study centres inside and outside of the US as we collectively seek to better define new techniques for best use of the EndoFLIP system for gastric band adjustments”.

Nanoscience gets funding
New Jobs in Irish Nanoscience Research?
Nanoscience research institute CRANN is to create new jobs in Research & Development, leading research projects including cancer research and computer chips.
The majority of these seventeen newly created positions are to be in the Institute of Molecular Medicine and TCD School of Medicine in conjunction with CRANN. This particular team will be aiming at nanomedical technology in the early diagnosis of cancer.
The remaining 5 positions are to be with Intel as CRANN focuses on developing computer chips for the next generation.
Professor John Boland, Director of CRANN says “Ireland is now globally recognised for it’s expertise in the area of nanoscience, as evidenced by the large amounts of non-exchequer funding we are winning through competitive international research projects.” He goes on to say “Research is a global competition and we need to contuinue to develop our knowledge base and expertise to make Ireland a true innovation centre”
The investment was seen as a “huge vote of confidence” by Professor Dermot Kelleher of TCD School of Medicine.

Facebook V Google?
Facebook or Google.. which do you use most in a day?
New figures have been released in the USA to say that Facebook was the most visited site, hitting the number 1 spot last Christmas. Share prices have even increased in both, giving Facebook the upperhand with 186pc compared to Google’s 9pc.
With all this in mind it comes to question the phenomenon that is Social Networking.
- Are you an avid Facebook user?
- Is Google set as your homepage purely because a quick few letters gives you access to anything you want to see?
You cannot put Facebook and Google in a direct comparison as they both do completely different things for you, as are both are an invaluable tool for your internet usage. It does beg to differ, however, how we do business these days.
Where I personally am a Facebook user, I find Linkedin to be Facebook’s business counterpart from a connections point of view. In the recruitment world and in addition to our own website, Social Networking is also a key part of our advertising…. we are on Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook giving out Job Alerts!
When you see reports and figures published like these it really is proof that this year, Facebook and Google are the ones to go with!

Intel Ireland or Intel Israel- where will the money go?
Intel Ireland-Whats New? For Intel Ireland the last major new project was the $2 Billion Fab 24-2 announced in May 2004 running 64 nanometer process technology (the size of wafer fab that chips are run from) . The next project announcement for investment on new semiconductor fabrication technology will likely be announced in March.
Up for competition against Ireland for this investment decision will be Israel with their FAB 28 Kiryat Gat facility located close to the border with Gaza and likely to be competing heavily both politically and financially for this project which will involve use of the latest 22 nanometer process technology.
To do so at Kiryat Gat will require almost $3 Billion in additional investment at a site that is within 15 miles (or missile range) of Gaza. This it appears is not the only concsideration given concerns over Iranian Nuclear proliferation and a possible 2nd incursion into Gaza in early summer following on from a very recent assasination of a major Hamas figure head which has led to charges of MOSAD involvement using stolen EU passports.
Yet Israel is a major contender for this investment and given Irelands current economic woes we are not flavor of the month when it comes to high labor and utility costs which threaten still to undermine our international competitiveness. So the question that is on everyones minds in Ireland and Israel is when it comes down to the wire-which location will Intel choose?
To date Intel has invested over $8billion at their Leixlip site in Kildare. Will they continue to invest or is this the end of the line? What do our readers think?

For Sale- Diagnostic Imaging
What is Medical Technical Sales? Medical Technical Sales can be the sale of services or equipment which have a technical basis to them. This can involve a very large range of services or equipment ranging from either Diagnostic Imaging (X-Rays, CAT scans MRI etc), PACS & Tele-Radiology, Diagnostics & Physiological Monitoring, Endoscopy
Ophthalmics & ENT or Urology & Surgical equipment.
Needless to say the markets for these can be just as large- consider the markets for syringes, X-ray imaging, Diagnostics imaging equipment all of these are extremely profitable for the companies involved in them that either manufacture or distribute for OEM’s (Original Engineering Manufacturer).
Science Jobs opportunities then are equally considerable with openings for Chief Scientific Officer, Aseptic Validation Engineer and Medical Technical Sales Reps for those with or without experience in Medical Technical Sales

Keep your password secure
I Love You is the 5th most common password used on the web and is one of 10 passwords commonly used by hackers. So the lesson is be more imaginative with your password if you want to protect your email account or secure sensitive company records.
Most people who use social neworks tend to use the same password for office IT networks and sometimes its just people being plain lazy when it comes to choosing a secure password. If you consider a hacker can crack an account password every second and 1000 accounts in 17 minutes, its worth taking the time to think of a secure password.
Hackers use automated programs using Robot Networks or botnets to crack secure or complex passwords so not having a good password is like leaving the front door open, going on holiday for a month and still expecting not to be robbed when you return. The word NAIVE springs to mind…
So for the benefit of our myscience readers (who shouldnt need to be told) try to avoid choosing from the following top ten passwords and you will be safer and more secure in your use of the internet and IT Networks in general….
1:- 123456
2:- 12345
3:- 12345678
4:- Password
5:- Iloveyou
6:- Princess
7:- Rockyou
8:- 1234567
9:- 12345678
10:- abc123

Science Officer/ Pharmacist at work
Drug Safety Officer or Chief Science Officer personnel work within pharmacovigilence and are responsible for the monitoring of developed and post marketed products. The role can involve writing of periodic safety update reports (PSUR) and also ensuring the accuracy of these reports written by colleagues in the same department.
PSUR’s are sometimes issued not only internally but for general distribution to offices internationally and these updates are tracked on Databases allowing for close monitoring of Adverse Event Reports (AER’s) to a wider technical community to enhance the safety awareness of drugs in use in the pharmacist community here and abroad.
Drug Safety Officers are usually pharmacists with Phamacy degrees who have worked in hospitals in the UK or Ireland for the HSE or NHS. The current demand for Drug safety officers is on the increase given wider ranges of products currently being developed for customers worldwide which has led to a corresponding increase in science jobs openings for science and pharma graduates. Given the current employment market it is a healthy option for candidates keen to look for a job less ordinary.

Medical Devices Marketing Directors Lead the Way
The Market for Marketing Directors and Managers for Science jobs has broadened and expanded to include almost all science sectors. Medical Device Manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, Biopharmaceuticals and laterly IC have begun to experience a resurgence of growth that is a positive indicator for the employment prospects of sales and marketing professionals. To date, all have witnessed considerable retrenchment in the technology sectors but no longer is this the case.
Medical Device and Pharmaceuticals manufacturing in Ireland as previously discussed has witnessed steady growth despite a global downturn that has affected most other sectors.
Medical Device Marketing Directors and Managers with expertise in marketing medical devices particularly disposable products are in great demand given the presence of such firms as Teleflex, Merit Medical, Boston Scientific and Medtronic who have seen huge growth in demand for their products.
Additionally, we have witnessed a considerable increase in key positions such as Pharmaceutical Sales and Marketing Manager, Chief Science Officer and Head of Research & Development to aid the development, sales and marketing of these new products for the local and foreign export markets.
New automated manufacturing technologies have also helped to reduce manufacturing costs for these goods and allied to applied R&D in these sectors there have been startling new product developments which have produced corresponding increased profits resulting in a far greater resilient industrial sector engaged in new science job creation centers which are of such vital importance to Ireland’s new smart economy.
