Eland to sell off EDT
Plans to sell Elan’s drug technology business EDT may rise a portion from when Kelly Martin aimed to sell in 2008.
Elan’s EDT is said to be worth $900m should it float on the US Stock market. Elan almost sold off for $1.4bn in 2008 with a number of equities reaching the second round of bidding.
Between the collapse of Lehman Brothers and financial panic, the deal was scuppered.
Here’s hoping the deal goes their way this time around!

Lilly aquisition of Pfizer Animal Health
A deal has been agreed between Pfizer Animal Health and Lilly which sees a transfer of a number of Pfizer’s assets to Lilly.
The agreement includes the acquisition of one of their Sligo Manufacturing Plants. All staff will be offered positions with Lilly.
European rights to many vaccines, parasiticides and feed additives are being sold off to Elanco, Lilly’s animal health division as part and parcel of its recent procurement of competitor Wyeth.
With the closing of this deal still to be approved, Pfizer are said to be receiving an undisclosed payment upfront.
President of Elanco, Jeff Simmons has welcomed the procurement, saying that Pfizer’s portfolio and plant is “a natural fit for Elanco and positions us well for sustained growth”
“Through this acquisition, we will expand and diversify our European presence with new market-leading products, augment our growing portfolio of companion animal medicines, and acquire new biologic and vaccine capabilities. We are excited about these new opportunities to improve animal health and protein production, and deliver greater value to our customers”

Facebook V Google?
Facebook or Google.. which do you use most in a day?
New figures have been released in the USA to say that Facebook was the most visited site, hitting the number 1 spot last Christmas. Share prices have even increased in both, giving Facebook the upperhand with 186pc compared to Google’s 9pc.
With all this in mind it comes to question the phenomenon that is Social Networking.
- Are you an avid Facebook user?
- Is Google set as your homepage purely because a quick few letters gives you access to anything you want to see?
You cannot put Facebook and Google in a direct comparison as they both do completely different things for you, as are both are an invaluable tool for your internet usage. It does beg to differ, however, how we do business these days.
Where I personally am a Facebook user, I find Linkedin to be Facebook’s business counterpart from a connections point of view. In the recruitment world and in addition to our own website, Social Networking is also a key part of our advertising…. we are on Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook giving out Job Alerts!
When you see reports and figures published like these it really is proof that this year, Facebook and Google are the ones to go with!

Research and Development in Biotechnology
R&D continues to witness increasing growth despite the downturn taking place in Ireland as new announcements have continued to be made by multinational companies involved in areas such as Medical Devices, Biopharma and Pharmaceutical manufacturing.
R&D or Research and Development has resulted in greater career prospects at home for Irelands science and technical professionals who continue to gain international respect for their work in fields as diverse as polymer technology, advanced medical products, telecommunications software and hardware.
As a result there has been a major increase in demand for R&D managers, R&D Engineers and Research associates carrying out front line research which has had the spin off effect of an increase in demand for Quality Assurance Managers and Engineers in addition to Regulatory Affairs professionals who form part of the collective support structure required for this ever increasing technical environment.
Recruitment is brisk and demand for science professionals for all these sectors is steadily increasing at a pace that seems to defy the current economic trend. Long may it continue

R&D- the $68 Billion Dollar Question. Today Pfizer begins the arduous process of choosing which of its R&D plants will be closed following completion of its successful buy out of Wyeth. Pfizer has 30 -60 days to complete this review review according to its chief financial officer.

Pfizer completes its takeover of Wyeth
Pfizer’s total Irish investment amounts to over €7 Billion with products as diverse as vaccines, biologics, nutrition and small molecules, and catering for both animal and human healthcare product sectors. The current combined workforce amounts to over 5000 people but this may be somewhat reduced following the conclusion of the review process which will lead to reductions in R&D, Engineering and support staff.
However, Pfizer has a significant pipe line of biopharmaceutical development products incoporating exploratory treatments for Alzheimers, Diabetes, inflamation and neuroscience.
The vast majority of these conditions are unmet medical conditions which have potentially longterm and lucrative treatment markets and as such hold the promise of long term future investment in Irish science jobs.
