Success for EndoFLIP!
Cropson’s EndoFLIP has had it’s first use in a new weight loss surgery technique, known as gastric imbrications.
The reversible gastric imbrications technique is a unique procedure that needs no device implanted or no tissue removed from the stomach.
The potential for success in the US is quite realistic, given the popularity for weight loss surgery in the US.
“The EndoFLIP device has the avility to change the way we do bariatric surgery all over the world” says Dr Daniel Cottam, “There has been nothing as revolutionary as this device since the lap band”.
Cottam added “I believe in five years we won’t know how we ever did bariatric surgery without it”.
EndoFLIP technology “fills an important need for the gastric imbrications procedure, namely providing visual feedback to the surgeon “, John O Dea, CEO Crospon as said.
Once again, we wish Crospon the very best of luck with their venture in the US.
Watch this space for further EndoFLIP updates!

Gastric -Band Technology
Following FDA approval for their EndoFLIP product, Medical Device developer Crospon has broken into the US market.
Crospon develops medical devices within the area of gastroenterology specifically in monitoring, diagnosis and therapy.
The World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery were presented with pilot clinical trial results for the optimum stoma size for gastric band adjustment.
Following the release in the European market in 2009, EndoFLIP will now be launched in the US market.
“Gastric banding is the fastes-growing class of bariatric surgery in the US, and we believe that EndoFLIP can bring a new science to gastric-band adjustment”, says Larry Fulton, VP Sales for the Americas.
Crospon Principal investigator Dr Robert G Snow also added, “In addition, we look forward to collaborating with a number of new leading bariatric surgery study centres inside and outside of the US as we collectively seek to better define new techniques for best use of the EndoFLIP system for gastric band adjustments”.

Plastics People Technical skills continue to be in demand
Plastic people -or those persons associated with manufacturing utilising polymer plastics such as PET continue to be in demand in the medical device manufacturing industry.
Positions for catagories such as Moulding Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or Production Manager with knowledge of injection moulding are keenly saught after by companies such as KCI, Vistakon and Mergon as these professionals are at the heart of their R&D and CIP stratagies which require cutting edge technology and High Value Added Knowledge and expertise that place Ireland at the same levels of Quality and New Product Development as Singapore, Germany and the US.
Our only weakness it would seem is there just are not enough qualified engineers and managers with plastic knowledge- perhaps we need to stretch our educational resources further to meet the demands of this increasingly lucrative sector?

For Sale- Diagnostic Imaging
What is Medical Technical Sales? Medical Technical Sales can be the sale of services or equipment which have a technical basis to them. This can involve a very large range of services or equipment ranging from either Diagnostic Imaging (X-Rays, CAT scans MRI etc), PACS & Tele-Radiology, Diagnostics & Physiological Monitoring, Endoscopy
Ophthalmics & ENT or Urology & Surgical equipment.
Needless to say the markets for these can be just as large- consider the markets for syringes, X-ray imaging, Diagnostics imaging equipment all of these are extremely profitable for the companies involved in them that either manufacture or distribute for OEM’s (Original Engineering Manufacturer).
Science Jobs opportunities then are equally considerable with openings for Chief Scientific Officer, Aseptic Validation Engineer and Medical Technical Sales Reps for those with or without experience in Medical Technical Sales

Plastics and composite Polymers producing advanced forms
Polymer and Plastic Injection Moulding Engineers are in increasing demand in Irish manufacturing and greater pressures are now on manufacturing engineers as the drive for high tech goods such as medical devices, automotive, telecommunications and IT hardware devices continues to increase as the applications for technology move towards convergence.
For instance, not so long ago telephones and cameras would not have been identified as mutually combineable products but today few people would consider buying a mobile phone without an integral camera. Similarly we are now finding that its the little things can be the difference when selling a car. These are sometimes innocuous items such as an Ipod Port or the external or internal dash or bodywork mouldings which have been designed on computer to provide either the most efficient aerodynamic profile or the optimum ergonomic interior for driver and passenger.
At the heart of all these items are polymers and plastics that consider touch, colour and in some case smell, providing product designers with hitherto previously unrealisable avenues for selling the end product whether its the latest lightweight Ipod or the fastest, safest and most fuel efficient cars on the road today.

Injection Moulded Plastics-Accurate and Affordable Products
Moulding your future is probably what some professions have slightly more control of than others. For instance of most science jobs, tooling and plastic injection moulding has certainly got a lot of opportunities to offer.
Within the medical devices manufacturing sector alone which has an immense product base, plastic moulded parts constitute a major proportion of the manufacturing process with everything from Contact Lenses to Kidney Dialysis Control Casings to, Catheters and complete electronic control assemblies.
Needless to say Moulding Engineers, Polymer Engineers, Process Technicians and Supervisors, Product Development Engineers, Tool Makers and Tool Designers play a vital role in bringing these products from concept and design to reality. Additionally they are fundamental in making sure a product is viable to bring to market and offers the customer or end user what they require.
A functional, robust, safe and durable product that will be cheap enough to manufacture as a function of its simplicity of design and its material flow characteristics which ensure that maximum yield and through put is achieved meeting the needs again of the customer that seeks to sell these products into the growing global medical devices and healthcare markets.

Plastic Injection Moulded Medical Devices
Medical Device Manufacturing continues to remain an active sector for science jobs recruiting. Current demand seems to be developing for Manufacturing Engineers, Production Managers and QA/RA Engineers.
In particular multinational employers are seeking candidates with experience of injection moulding manufacturing operations involving medical device products. However prospective candidates with injection moulding experience are not limited to the healthcare industry and can come from the automotive sector for instance where innovative technical moulding solutions are in demand for customers demanding precision and high quality end products.
A typical Production Manager in demand today may be educated to degree level or hold an equivalent engineering discipline qualification and be experience as a production/manufacturing manager in plastics moulding operations. Ideally those operations that involve carrying out custom moulding for the medical device, healthcare or automotive sectors. Production/Manufacturing Managers also tend to have excellent planning, problem solving, leadership and people management skills.
Given the current market it appears these skills will be in demand despite the downturn witnessed in other sectors and it is a positive indicator that perhaps there are prospects yet for those seeking science jobs in Ireland today.

Medical Devices Marketing Directors Lead the Way
The Market for Marketing Directors and Managers for Science jobs has broadened and expanded to include almost all science sectors. Medical Device Manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, Biopharmaceuticals and laterly IC have begun to experience a resurgence of growth that is a positive indicator for the employment prospects of sales and marketing professionals. To date, all have witnessed considerable retrenchment in the technology sectors but no longer is this the case.
Medical Device and Pharmaceuticals manufacturing in Ireland as previously discussed has witnessed steady growth despite a global downturn that has affected most other sectors.
Medical Device Marketing Directors and Managers with expertise in marketing medical devices particularly disposable products are in great demand given the presence of such firms as Teleflex, Merit Medical, Boston Scientific and Medtronic who have seen huge growth in demand for their products.
Additionally, we have witnessed a considerable increase in key positions such as Pharmaceutical Sales and Marketing Manager, Chief Science Officer and Head of Research & Development to aid the development, sales and marketing of these new products for the local and foreign export markets.
New automated manufacturing technologies have also helped to reduce manufacturing costs for these goods and allied to applied R&D in these sectors there have been startling new product developments which have produced corresponding increased profits resulting in a far greater resilient industrial sector engaged in new science job creation centers which are of such vital importance to Ireland’s new smart economy.
