Eland to sell off EDT
Plans to sell Elan’s drug technology business EDT may rise a portion from when Kelly Martin aimed to sell in 2008.
Elan’s EDT is said to be worth $900m should it float on the US Stock market. Elan almost sold off for $1.4bn in 2008 with a number of equities reaching the second round of bidding.
Lilly aquisition of Pfizer Animal Health
A deal has been agreed between Pfizer Animal Health and Lilly which sees a transfer of a number of Pfizer’s assets to Lilly.
The agreement includes the acquisition of one of their Sligo Manufacturing Plants. All staff will be offered positions with Lilly.
European rights to many vaccines, parasiticides and feed additives are being sold off to Elanco, Lilly’s animal health division as part and parcel of its recent procurement of competitor Wyeth.
With the closing of this deal still to be approved, Pfizer are said to be receiving an undisclosed payment upfront.
President of Elanco, Jeff Simmons has welcomed the procurement, saying that Pfizer’s portfolio and plant is “a natural fit for Elanco and positions us well for sustained growth”
“Through this acquisition, we will expand and diversify our European presence with new market-leading products, augment our growing portfolio of companion animal medicines, and acquire new biologic and vaccine capabilities. We are excited about these new opportunities to improve animal health and protein production, and deliver greater value to our customers”

New Science Jobs planned for in Medical Devices and Biopharma
Investment in new science jobs are being planned in the areas of Biopharmaceuticals, Medical Device Manufacture, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and Semiconductor manufacturing.
The IDA announced yesterday that their strategic investment plan Horizon 2020 will involve the creation of over one hundred thousand new jobs in the next five years through a combination of nurturing indigenous employers and targeting FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) from the likes of Pfizer, Intel, Teleflex, KCI, Boston Scientific and HP.
FDI has created over 140, 000 jobs and supports indirectly 240,000 jobs in the economy which has led to expenditure of €19 Billion and payroll of close to €7 Billion.
But has been said before plans are great but action is better- lets hope the IDA plans come to fruition.
The Science of Ergonomics
The Science of Health and Safety involves and incorporates numerous aspects of work as well as how work is undertaken. Ergonomics for instance is the science of work, equipment and workplaces to fit the worker. Done correctly, ergonomic design can prevent RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) which can progresively develop over time leading to long term disability.
Health and Safety professionals cover a variety of industries and play an important role in creating a safe and hazard free environment for all workers whether they are working on construction sites, manufacturing facilities or office environments.
Consideration then for Occupational Health and Safety which is a cross discipliniary function with the objective of creating and maintaining a safe environment for all workers but also has consideration for the possible safety risks to members of the public or nearby communities.
Science Jobs have grown up around this profession in areas incorporating diverse roles and professions such as Ergonomists, Drug Safety Officers, Hygenists, Public Health Engineers, Toxicologists, Radiological Protection Officers, Design Safety Engineers, Risk Assessors, Loss Prevention Engineers up to and including Disaster Management professionals- which Ireland appears to be in very short supply of -given how well (or rather not) that the recent floods, snow and ice weather events have been dealt with.
Perhaps there’s an opening in government for anyone who would like to take on the role given our own ministers abundant inability and lack of concern (due to holiday commitments) who also have no clear or obvious understanding of the importance of preparing for bad weather by simply making sure we have plenty of grit;-I hear its dirt cheap these days!
Surprisingly enough we get the same weather the same time every year and yet our ministers are constantly surprised each year by ice or rain in January. For those ministers who havent witnessed it that time of year (or season as they refer to it scientifically) is called Winter!
Ending on a positive note however, as with most science jobs in Ireland today, there has certainly been a significant increase in Health and Safety related jobs with a continuing demand that is indicative of growth in general for the Irish economy which has been painfully slow in coming after recent catastrophic employment losses. Long may it continue.
Biopharma R&D
R&D Continues to expand with several major projecst on the cards for Intel, Pfizer and UCD. Major projects involving nanotechnology, Biopharma and Semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Ireland will continue the extensive developments which have taken place in the past five years.
Ireland continues to lead R&D in numerous sectors including advanced manufacturing on medical device products and as a result science jobs will be in demand across various life science sectors such as QA/RA, Validation, R&D and drug product developments.
Ireland with the backing of major multinational clients such as Intel, Pfizer and Abbotts will be a continuing center of excellence in science and technology as a result and this will be a primary driver in Irelands emergence from recession
A New Year and New Science Jobs are expected to increase. Last year American firms were the largest investors in
Intel- One of Ireland Inc's Largest R&D Investors
Ireland inc with nearly 2000 additional jobs created across a range of manufacturing and technical service sectors. The US has invested almost $150 Billion in Ireland in the past year with major investments from Intel, Boston Scientific, Teleflex, Pfizer, HP and Abbott to name a few. This investment is showing no immediate sign of diminishing.
Almost 100, 000 people are in full time emplopyment with US multinationals counting for almost 70% of IDA backed projects throughout Ireland with close to 600 firms covering Biopharma, medical devices, semiconductors, precision engineering, software, telecommunications, Pharmaceuticals, Project Management and Engineering firms providing high end design and technical skills that will be the basis for Irelands future smart economy.
2009 was with out doubt one of the hardest years Ireland has endured economically but we possess a wealth of technical and knowledge based skills that translate and compete internationally with the best and brightest from the US, Germany, Japan and Singapore.
R&D invetsment in Ireland both Nationally and internationally has also grown which indicates a level of confidence in the future that looks beyond the recession we have experienced to date. We are definately not out of the woods yet but we can see through the trees to the light beyond. Knowledge will light the way to a brighter future.
Medical Device Product R&D
What does it take to be Head of R&D? To be head of R&D in a major medical device company, the ideal candidate for this role generally needs to be capable of leading engineers, scientists and technicians usally being cogniscent of efforts taking place at various sites both at home in Ireland and around the globe. They also need to communicate effectively between the sales and marketing front end of the business as well as the R&D Facilities.
Commercially R&D Managers need to review the market competition and to give the R&D function pragmatic, realistic and practical product projects to bring them to the market. Within the medical device sector this will also involve working closely with doctors and key opinion leaders to identify and progress new technologies, to improve existing product designs and to seek new clinical applications for existing technologies.
R& D Managers direct engineering operations and carry out scientific assessments of new technologies, products, concepts and applications and solutions. They work very closely with QA/Regulatory affairs to define the transfer over of these products to manufacturing operations. R&D Managers also heavily influence the tactical and strategic direction of the companies they work for through the sharing of their technical knowledge and the guidance and influence they have on people, programs and technology
